Making the DVSA’s standards simple, accessible and actionable for driving instructors. Holistic, jargon-free and practical, so you can improve your lessons and align with, then exceed, the standard.
The story
Two instructors who kept hearing the same question.
“What does the examiner actually want?” Phil heard it from the PDIs he trained through his driving school in Devon. Diana heard it from instructors across the country after qualifying with a Grade A in 2021 and being asked, almost immediately, to help others do the same.
The answer was never a secret. It was just buried in guidance documents, franchise sales pitches and Facebook arguments. So in 2023 they built Inspire: a membership where the marking sheet is explained in plain English, real lessons are reviewed openly, and instructors help each other instead of competing.
Today the membership has 150+ members, the podcast has 61 episodes and a 5.0 rating, and Inspire was named Social Media Influencer of the Year at the Intelligent Instructor Awards 2026. Both founders still teach learners every week. That is the whole point.

The only question that matters
“Is what I’m doing right now helping this learner learn best?”
Forget trying to hold 17 competencies in your head while a pupil approaches a roundabout. Ask that one question, every minute of every lesson, and the competencies take care of themselves. It is how we teach learners, how we train instructors, and how we run Inspire.

Neither of us has retired to a training room. The examples are from lessons we taught this week, with real pupils on real roads.
Plain English, always
If it needs jargon to sound clever, it is not understood well enough. We explain the DVSA standard the way we would explain it in a car park.
Curious, never judgemental
With pupils, with PDIs, with each other. Nobody learns anything while they are being told off.
