How To Get A Grade A

How to Get a Grade A – It’s All in the Detail

Every driving instructor dreams of that Grade A — not just for the score, but for what it represents. It’s proof of consistent, detailed, pupil-centred teaching — and it opens real doors. A Grade A can mean cheaper car insurance, greater professional credibility, and even the opportunity to join the ORDIT register if that’s something you aspire to.

But here’s the truth: there’s no magic trick. As Phil and I shared in our recent Zoom, achieving a Grade A isn’t about one killer question or a flashy technique. It’s about doing the common things uncommonly well.

Consistency and Detail: The Real Game-Changers

Consistency is what turns those twos into threes. You can demonstrate the right skills in patches and still fall short. What takes you over the line is delivering those same skills throughout the whole session.

The instructors who achieve Grade A are the ones who stay switched on — constantly reading, adapting, questioning, and fine-tuning the experience moment by moment.

Then comes detail. Grade A instructors go beyond “What happened there?” and ask, “What made you decide to go then?” or “How will you judge that sooner next time?” That curiosity adds depth, reflection, and learning.

The Six Pillars of a Grade A Lesson

    • In our session, we broke down what truly underpins a top-tier lesson:

      1. Goal Setting – Clear, pupil-led outcomes with meaning.
      2. Adapting – Micro-tweaks that keep learning in the sweet spot.
      3. Roles & Responsibilities – Everyone knows what’s expected, including how and when you’ll step in.
      4. Teaching & Learning Strategies – Flexible methods that suit the individual, not the instructor’s comfort zone.
      5. Keeping it Safe – Safety first, always; learning can’t happen if your pupil feels under threat.
      6. Empowering the Pupil – The pupil does most of the talking, reflecting, and analysing.

These aren’t boxes to tick — they’re threads woven throughout every minute of an effective lesson.

    From ‘Good’ to ‘Grade A’

Most instructors already know what to do. The difference lies in how consistently they do it and how much depth they bring.

When you combine clear goals, adaptive instruction, detailed questioning, and proactive safety management, that Grade A stops being elusive — it becomes achievable.

    Ask yourself:

“If someone got in my car halfway through a lesson, would they instantly know the goal, the strategy, and who’s in control?”
If not, that’s your focus for this week.
